Mt 6:1-6, 16-18

“Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. “So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

“And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

“And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Am I a Hypocrite?

Aside from the fact that my left hand frequently doesn’t know what my right hand is doing, and that I don’t generally look too dismal, I really, REALLY don’t want to be a hypocrite. There are a few people, I admit, that I think are hypocrites, and I have a bit of a problem not being judgmental.  Yet, I have to consider this idea deeply and prayerfully. Could I sometimes be looked at, through the eyes of God, as a hypocrite, perhaps, for example, when I fail to really take a good look at my actions and my motives? Am I doing something (even something very good) for my ego, or for my God? The situations may range from a simple, one-time event to a serious discernment of my life’s path. But I must always ask: Am I choosing to follow God’s call for me today?

Prayer

God of silence and God of all sound,

help me to listen.

Help me to do the deep listening to the sounds of my soul,

waiting to hear your soft voice calling me deeper into you.

Give me attentive ears

that begin to separate the noise from the sounds that are you;

you who have been speaking to me

and through me my whole life,

for so long that you can seem like background noise.

Today help me hear you anew.
