Memorial of Saint Lucy, Virgin and Martyr

Mt 21: 23-27

When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” Jesus said to them, “I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.

Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” And they argued with one another, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet.” So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.”

And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

Graced Humility

The chief priests, bound and blinded by their fear of losing control and earthly power, are unable to see and accept Jesus for who he is, and so they miss out on the greatest opportunity of conversion and grace. We already know and believe that Jesus is our Lord and Savior, so let us reflect first on when we couldn’t, or wouldn’t, see Jesus present in our life. What attachments hold or block you from recognizing Christ present or receiving God’s abundant grace?

And when we are humble and surrender to God and his will, how amazing and awesome is he! St. Ignatius struggled with pride and vainglory, yet through his cannonball experience which led him to his life-changing conversion, and then his Manresa spiritual awakening, he discovered and teaches us about the importance of walking in honesty and humility with our God. His Spiritual Exercise, Three Kinds of Humility (165-167) takes us to a deepening surrender, intimacy, and grace, as we consider humility, in today’s terms, as basic, extra, and beyond.

What kind of humility do I have today? Am I able to move toward the “magis,” the more or better regarding my humility? Can I surrender all to God, fully trusting his love and care for me?

Prayer

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty,
my memory, my understanding,
and my entire will,
All I have and call my own.
You have given all to me.
To you, Lord, I return it.
Everything is yours; do with it what you will.
Give me only your love and your grace,
that is enough for me.

—Suscipe prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola

Welcome to JesuitPrayer.org

Ignatian spirituality reminds us that God pursues us in the routines of our home and work life, and in the hopes and fears of life's challenges. The founder of the Jesuits, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, created the Spiritual Exercises to deepen our relationship with Christ and to move our contemplation into service. May this prayer site anchor your day and strengthen your resolve to remember what truly matters.
