Mt 8: 5-11

When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible distress.” And he said to him, “I will come and cure him.” The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed.

For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and the slave does it.” When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, “Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven,

Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed.

Here we have the centurion, a man with great power, under the authority of Rome, who cares for his servant, and is powerless to help him. He has faith that Jesus can heal him and he recognizes and respects the authority that God has given Jesus. He approaches Jesus in humility, asking from both his powerlessness and authority, for help. Jesus sees him, and his great faith, and has compassion for him, saying he will cure him. He tells us that this man, an unwelcome outsider to the Jewish people, has the greatest faith of all. Jesus is teaching us that his love, his healing, his call are for each of us, for all people, to come and see, and follow him.

And so, we are all welcome, we are all seen and loved and healed. And we all are called to love God and each other, just as he taught us, through love and sacrifice and service.

Is there anyone or group that you have difficulty seeing as God’s creation and chosen?

Prayer

Lord, help me to recognize and accept my powerlessness with humility.

Give me the courage and faith to seek you, believing that you will heal.

Help me to accept your will and plan, whether your healing goes as I hope, or not.

Give me the grace, trust, and generosity of spirit to align my will with your will.

May your will always be done, in my life, and in the lives of all people who seek you and your grace, no matter who they are or where they come from.

Amen.
