St. Peter Canisius, SJ

Jn 10: 22-30

At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered, “I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep.

My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”

Lovingly made

‘I know them, and they follow me.’ Let’s not overlook how meaningful this statement is. Jesus
knows each and every one of us because he made each and every one of us. Beyond all of that God made each one of us in his image, and he knows us and loves us as we are. Jesus doesn’t need us to be anything other than ourselves with him. In fact, it is when we are pretending to be something we are not that we are often led to the worst versions of ourselves. So today be exactly the person that God made you to be. Do not pretend to be something you’re not. For you are wonderfully, lovingly, made.

Prayer

God, you made us in your image. Help us to accept ourselves and love ourselves just as you love us, not for who we think we should be, but for who you made us to be. Amen —Alex Hale, SJ

Welcome to JesuitPrayer.org

Ignatian spirituality reminds us that God pursues us in the routines of our home and work life, and in the hopes and fears of life's challenges. The founder of the Jesuits, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, created the Spiritual Exercises to deepen our relationship with Christ and to move our contemplation into service. May this prayer site anchor your day and strengthen your resolve to remember what truly matters.
