Lk 6: 36-38

Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.”

Mercy is at the heart of God’s love

“Don’t judge!” and “I’m not judging” have become common phrases in our culture. In fact, our pleas that others #dontjudge us and our claim that we are #notjudging others are well documented. On Instagram, the hashtag #dontjudge has 2 million posts and #notjudging has 16,000 posts. These hashtags are reciprocal - what they're really saying is “don’t judge me because I don’t judge you” - and they keep us focused on the negative behavior of judging and being judgmental, rather than on the grace and virtue of being merciful. Mercy is at the heart of God’s love. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us to reflect this love to others by choosing mercy over judgment, compassion over punishment, relationships over resentment (no hashtag needed).

Think of a time when someone treated you with mercy or compassion. Who in your own life needs some mercy or compassion today? How can you show that person the same mercy and compassion that are at the heart of God’s love?

Prayer

O Lord, I want to be completely transformed into Your mercy and to be Your living reflection. May the greatest of all divine attributes, that of Your unfathomable mercy, pass through my heart and soul to my neighbor.

—St. Maria Faustina, from “Prayer to be Merciful,” Diary # 163

Welcome to JesuitPrayer.org

Ignatian spirituality reminds us that God pursues us in the routines of our home and work life, and in the hopes and fears of life's challenges. The founder of the Jesuits, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, created the Spiritual Exercises to deepen our relationship with Christ and to move our contemplation into service. May this prayer site anchor your day and strengthen your resolve to remember what truly matters.
