Lk 21: 12-19

“But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify. So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict.

You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls.

Live with integrity in serving the Lord.

Being faithful to the Lord in these challenging times takes courage and integrity. While integrity may be a commonly used word, it is not easy to live. Sometimes we only know if we have it when we are tested.

Years ago, I was given a cherished book from my daughter Sarah titled Integrity by Stephen Carter, a Professor of Law at Yale University. Carter states that there are three factors involved in leading a life of integrity: (1) Discern what is right and what is wrong – realizing your personal views need to be well thought out, and for a person of faith, seeking to follow God's will. (2) Act on what you have discerned, even at personal cost. (3) Speak openly about the motivations behind your behavior.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus presents the difficulties and the cost we will face in being faithful. And Jesus instills courage in us, reminding us that he will give us the words and wisdom we need to do what is right.
