Mt 25: 14-15, 19-21

“For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, ‘Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’

All is your gift, I restore it all to you

The talents Jesus speaks of include our time, our personal talents, and our treasure, not only the last, the money we give. Time and personal talents are also gifts to be used for the benefit of the needy. We gather each Sunday to embolden one another toward a life of charity toward all, in gratitude to God who has so blessed us. Does active participation at Mass, and the generous employment of our time and talents, embolden others and attract the young to remain active in our community of faith? The presence of the Lord at our Eucharists is more or less experienced depending on the fullness of our participation around the table of the Lord.

—Fr. Jack Zupez, SJ, is a member of the Jesuits Central and Southern Province. He lives at Jesuit Hall in St. Louis and has served in full-time prison ministry.

Prayer

Lord, help me to discern how you would have me employ my time and talents to increase the quality of participation in our parish Eucharistic celebrations, and inspired by the grace of this sacrament to lead a life filled with good works. Amen.

Welcome to JesuitPrayer.org

Ignatian spirituality reminds us that God pursues us in the routines of our home and work life, and in the hopes and fears of life's challenges. The founder of the Jesuits, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, created the Spiritual Exercises to deepen our relationship with Christ and to move our contemplation into service. May this prayer site anchor your day and strengthen your resolve to remember what truly matters.
