St. Charles Borromeo

Lk 14: 25-33

Now large crowds were traveling with him; and he turned and said to them, “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’

Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.

Placing our focus on following Jesus

What does Jesus mean when he says if we are to follow him, we are to distance ourselves from our family or we cannot be his disciples?  When I entered the Sisters of St. Francis, I was homesick being separated from my family, but at some point, we found our way.  Children go off to college, get married, leave for military service – all separating from family to follow a path.  Sometimes our choices are not supported by our family.  In today’s Gospel, I wonder if Jesus is calling us to grow up, follow him, and not to count the cost. Regardless of our choice, we are called to focus on being a disciple of Jesus.  Today let us reflect on our life choices and how they help us grow in our faith.  Let us rejoice in how God is working through us to accomplish good through whatever walk of life we follow.

Prayer

Almighty God, you have generously made known to human beings the mysteries of your life through Jesus Christ your Son in the Holy Spirit.

Enlighten our minds to know these mysteries which your Church treasures and teaches.

Move our hearts to love them and our wills to live in accord with them.

Give us the ability to teach this Faith to others without pride, without ostentation, and without personal gain.

Let us realize that we are simply your instruments for bringing others to the knowledge of the wonderful things you have done for all your creatures.

Help us to be faithful to the tasks that you have entrusted to us. Amen.

Welcome to JesuitPrayer.org

Ignatian spirituality reminds us that God pursues us in the routines of our home and work life, and in the hopes and fears of life's challenges. The founder of the Jesuits, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, created the Spiritual Exercises to deepen our relationship with Christ and to move our contemplation into service. May this prayer site anchor your day and strengthen your resolve to remember what truly matters.
