Mk 7: 24-30

From there he set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” But she answered him, “Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” Then he said to her, “For saying that, you may go—the demon has left your daughter.” So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Active faith

Some of my favorite stories in the Bible showcase awe-inspiring acts of faith!  Upon encountering Jesus, individuals were each given instructions to do something to contribute to their healing; whether it was washing the mud out of eyes, standing up to walk, or picking up a mat.

To me, the woman in today’s Gospel has active faith! Her faith matches the woman who reached past embarrassment and protocol to touch the hem of Jesus' garment in a crowd...to be healed.

In my mind, active faith = skin in the game! The faithful determination that embodied these requests is attractive and inspiring to me. The woman’s persistence revealed the raw intensity of her relationship with the Lord. This contagious, mountain-moving faith shows our God that we're "all-in.” It is at this point that we eagerly enter into the ring anticipating that our blessing is on its way. What are you willing to do to be healed?
