Jn 3:16-21

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.”

God isn’t out to get us

There was a rumor going around for centuries that God wanted to destroy us because of our sin. And so we created an economy of sacrifices to pay off the debt owed to God. Turns out that we had it all wrong. Jesus was sent to announce the good news that God had no such plan of violence against us and was not interested in operating like a debt collection agency. Rather, God was interested in creating an agency of grace, transforming sinners into believers, changing hearts of stone into flesh, and entering into greater union with his children. This Easter season, we are invited once again to push back against all that is life-taking with the spiritual techniques given to us by our loving God.

Prayer

Loving God, you have loved us from before we were born, and you continue to offer us your love even when we don’t feel we are worthy.  Open our hearts to receive this love, that we may embrace you and respond generously to your word in our hearts. We ask this through your son, Jesus, who you sent among to be a bearer of your good news.  Amen.

Welcome to JesuitPrayer.org

Ignatian spirituality reminds us that God pursues us in the routines of our home and work life, and in the hopes and fears of life's challenges. The founder of the Jesuits, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, created the Spiritual Exercises to deepen our relationship with Christ and to move our contemplation into service. May this prayer site anchor your day and strengthen your resolve to remember what truly matters.
