Gn 17: 3-9

Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, ‘As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.

I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. And I will give to you, and to your offspring after you, the land where you are now an alien, all the land of Canaan, for a perpetual holding; and I will be their God.’

God said to Abraham, ‘As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations.

Abraham’s Offspring

I have admired Abraham and his relationship with God ever since I had a realization at Mass that Abraham was my faith father and that his God was my God. Since this experience many years ago, I’ve felt a connection to this Old Testament patriarch whose relationship with God was deeply personal.

Abraham trusts God. He accepts his new name and identity. And although he laughs in a later passage when God tells him Isaac will be born, he has faith that God will make it so—God will indeed make him “exceedingly fruitful.”

We are some of those offspring God promised to Abraham. We are each as precious to God as Abraham was. Today, what will you and I do to serve this awesome God and uphold our part of the everlasting covenant? Who are your faith fathers and mothers that you might remember today and thank God for?

Prayer

Lord God, you planted a mustard seed of faith within me, just as you did with Abraham. Water this tiny seed with your love and your grace so that my faith and trust may grow. Thank you for all the people of faith who have nurtured my tiny seed. May my acts of love this day be exceedingly fruitful for others. Amen.
