St. Frances Xavier Cabrini & St. Stanislaus Kostka, SJ

Lk 17: 1-6

Jesus said to his disciples, “Occasions for stumbling are bound to come, but woe to anyone by whom they come! It would be better for you if a millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea than for you to cause one of these little ones to stumble. Be on your guard! If another disciple sins, you must rebuke the offender, and if there is repentance, you must forgive.

And if the same person sins against you seven times a day, and turns back to you seven times and says, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive.” The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

Why forgive?

The exhortation to forgive as often as someone asks our forgiveness is a hard one. It often feels easier to hold a grudge and to claim the moral high ground, knowing that we are the injured party. But those grudges not only damage our relationship with another, but they also damage our relationship with God. If we believe someone else to be up unforgivable, what must we believe about our own transgressions before God?
The first week of the Spiritual Exercises invites us to recognize ourselves as loved sinners. Even through we are human, and we fail time and time again, God is willing to forgive us over and over because of his great and abiding love for us.
What is a hurt that you need to let go of and forgive?

Welcome to JesuitPrayer.org

Ignatian spirituality reminds us that God pursues us in the routines of our home and work life, and in the hopes and fears of life's challenges. The founder of the Jesuits, Saint Ignatius of Loyola, created the Spiritual Exercises to deepen our relationship with Christ and to move our contemplation into service. May this prayer site anchor your day and strengthen your resolve to remember what truly matters.
