St. Ephrem of Syria

Mk 12: 35-37

While Jesus was teaching in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Messiah is the son of David? David himself, by the Holy Spirit, declared,

‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet.”’

David himself calls him Lord; so how can he be his son?” And the large crowd was listening to him with delight.

Teaching the Truth

Today we encounter Jesus as the great Teacher, whose words give delight to those who listen to him. But Jesus is not teaching multiplication facts, grammar, or world history (as much delight as these subjects can give). He comes to teach us, by his words and deeds, how to live with true love and in true joy. Jesus’s teachings do not become outdated, and his message is not in need of revision. Jesus forever remains “the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”

In our modern context, in which the truth and facts have become topics of doubt and debate, I have been reflecting on the enduring fact that Jesus is “the Truth.” The unconditional love which Jesus has for all people and which he teaches to us will always be true. How does Jesus teach you today, and what is his message for you?

Prayer

Show your ways to me, O Lord,
and teach me your paths.
Direct me in your truth, and teach me;
for you are God my Savior.
