The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!”
The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day.
It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

The highlight of our day was to be a special tour of the Chateau Lafite Rothchild and its winery. On the drive there, with an hour to spare, we stopped at a no-name winery whose eccentric and delightful owner gave us a tour. Afterwards he joined us for a tasting. We enjoyed his company so much the tasting lasted for a bottle and a half of his best wine. We completely missed the planned highlight of the day but we had the highlight of our entire trip!
I suspect that is how John’s disciples looked back on their day described in the gospel. They expected another great day with John, but got the day of their lives with Jesus!
I wonder how many times I may have missed a day with Jesus because I was so focused on what “I” had to get done and was in no mood to see and hear what the Lord was calling me to. So I pray to have the eyes to see and the ears to hear the Lord calling me, even in the most unexpected and strange ways.
