Hebrews 4: 12-16

Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account.

Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Not to Harm but to Heal

The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart. [Hebrews 4: 12]

A friend’s comments, a critic’s warning, a child’s unwitting observation—all are ways in which God’s living blade pierces my heart. It pierces not to harm but to heal me, not to sever but to reconnect my heart to God’s.

Prayer

Lord, when we feel distant to you because we have yielded to temptation, let the words of St. Paul ease us back to your extended reach: “Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Lord, we promise to stay close by when we feel most unworthy. We will embrace your mercy and cling to the promise that you “sympathize with our weaknesses.” Lord, help us to recall your divine generosity when we experience hurt, disillusionment, or betrayal by those closest to us.
