Hebrews 1: 1-6

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word.

When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you”? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”? And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.”

The Perfect Representation

Jesus reflects the brightness of God’s glory and is the exact likeness of God’s own being. [Hebrews 1:3]

Saint Ambrose was a fourth-century bishop of Milan. His preaching played a major role in St. Augustine’s conversion. In one of his homilies, Ambrose used the following example to illustrate how Jesus mirrors God: “As the print of the seal on the wax is the express image of the seal itself, so Christ is the express image—the perfect representation—of God.” It is this image that today’s reading sets before us. Jesus’ love mirrors God’s love. Jesus mercy mirrors God’s mercy. Jesus’ gentleness mirrors God’s gentleness.

What is one practical way I could become a better mirror Jesus in my own daily life?

Anyone who has really understood that God became human can never speak and act in an inhuman way.—Karl Barth

Prayer

Lord, you are “the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being.” We pray that our lives reflect your abundant generosity, mercy, and faithfulness. As a follower we are called to be another Christ. Help us to empty ourselves to make room for you. And woe to us if our brothers and sisters come seeking you and find only us.
