Feast of St. Teresa of Jesus

Luke 11: 29-32

When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation; it asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be to this generation.

The queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and see, something greater than Solomon is here! The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here!

Leadership

Today is the feast of St. Teresa of Jesus, the reformer of Carmelite convents throughout Spain and subsequently responsible for a reform that spread around the world.  Her canonization ceremony in 1622 also witnessed the canonizations of Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Philip Neri, and Isadore the farmer. The insights she described in writings on prayer gained her the designation of Doctor of the Church, a recognition given by Pope Paul VI in 1970.  A truly incredible woman whose piety, sense of humor, organizational skills, and concern for the church were all combined into one of the great leaders of the church.

St. Teresa’s love of Jesus and his church stands as a special witness for others. A dynamic personality who could create reform and challenge indolence while at the same time create calm and peace.

—Fr. Michael Maher, S.J.

Prayer

Let nothing trouble you,
Let nothing make you afraid.
All things pass away.
God never changes.
Patience obtains everything.
God alone is enough.

—St. Teresa of Jesus
