Ignatian Prayer

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

–The Serenity Prayer, Reinhold Niebuhr

All Powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by water and the Holy

Spirit you freed your sons and daughters from sin and gave them new life.

Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their Helper and Guide.

Give them the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of

knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in

your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Bishop’s prayer during the Confirmation Rite of the Catholic Church

Lord, deepen our faith so we can always trust in your passion, in your victory over death, and in your wounds. Let our prayer bring us out of ourselves. For then we begin to grasp the immensity of your sacrifice, visible in your eternal wounds. Lord, we also ask that our prayers help us to find your wounds in our needy brothers and sisters, who “carry the cross and still have not won, as Jesus has.”

—Adapted from Pope Francis’ homily, 5-13, 2013

Lord Jesus, teach me to be generous; teach me to serve you as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to seek reward, except that of knowing that I do your will. Amen.   —Prayer for Generosity, St. Ignatius of Loyola

Lord, as we experience our day, raise our vigilance to pay attention to those who support us and those who need support from us. Grant us your grace to never miss an opportunity to say thank you. Through an assuring word, through recognition of another’s work, through a smile that invites levity in the moment, let us be an encourager to others. And as we move through the many routines of this day, let us hold close to our heart the most amazing commitment you share with the Father: “I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.” —The Jesuit Prayer Team

If there are questions we need to face and if there are people we need to engage, help us to move forward with selfless motives. —The Jesuit Prayer Team

Lord, what if we really embraced your pronouncement that “You did not choose me but I chose you.” Would we dream bigger? Would we take more risks? Would we be more persistent and have more patience? Would we be more hopeful that we could “go and bear fruit, fruit that will last”?  This day we will savor the awesome privilege of being chosen by you.  And we will move forward with a divine aspiration and a divine confidence. —The Jesuit Prayer Team
